Founded by Carla Towill, The Unbridled is an archive-led approach to wedding photography. Less concerned with performance than presence, the work is shaped by atmosphere, human connection and the moments that exist between the obvious ones. Each commission becomes a record of the day as it was lived, rather than simply how it looked.

MY EYE WAS PROBABLY FORMING LONG BEFORE I REALISED.

I WAS WEARING ROUND LENNON GLASSES AT SIX,

SO THERE WERE SIGNS.

By thirteen, I'd found Oasis. Life-changing, quite frankly. At fifteen, the darkest plum coloured bedroom covered in photographs torn from Dazed & Confused and i-D. Around the same time I picked up a camera and starting photographing the streets.

At seventeen, first flat and I furnished it from an old man's house clearance. Some of the pieces still live with me now. Apparently I've always liked things with a story.

These days, life swings between two very different worlds. Weddings, cities, travel, people, noise - then home on Dartmoor. Space, stillness and as much solitude as I can reasonably get away with.

I LOVE THE NOISE. I NEED THE QUIET.

I bought my house for yes the wooden floors, tall ceilings and middle-of-nowhere location. But mostly because when I first walked through the door, the light and shadows were making marks across the wall.

I don't think I ever consciously developed an aesthetic. I think I built a life around the things I've always been drawn to, and the work followed.

INSTANT YES.

Harsh light and film is one of my favourite combinations within weddings.

HER:

I’m interested in the way a person changes across the course of a day.

The version of her before anyone arrives. The one walking towards something. The one surrounded by people. The one who, hours later, has forgotten entirely that I’m there.

A portrait isn’t always a face looking back at the camera.

Sometimes it’s the way someone moves through a room, the people that gather around them, a hand across their back, or what happens when they think nobody is watching.

Taken together, those fragments become something closer to a record of who she was there, on that particular day.

SOME WEDDINGS STAY WITH YOU LONG AFTER YOU’VE DELIVERED THE GALLERY.

NOT BECAUSE OF HOW THEY LOOK.

BUT BECAUSE OF HOW THEY FELT.

ZOE AND DANIEL’S WEDDING AT ORCHARDLEIGH ESTATE WAS BUILT AROUND MAKING SPACE FOR THE QUIET MOMENTS.

THEY EXCHANGED JOURNALS THEY HAD BEEN WRITING IN SINCE THEY FIRST MET.

AFTER THEIR CEREMONY, THEY STEPPED AWAY WITH THEIR SON TO READ THEIR PERSONAL VOWS BENEATH A TREE, JUST THE THREE OF THEM.

LATER, BEFORE THE EVENING BEGAN, THEY TOOK A FEW MINUTES TOGETHER IN THEIR SUITE.

NO TIMELINE.

NO AUDIENCE.

JUST A CHANCE TO PAUSE BEFORE THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE DAY.

ON: ATMOSPHERE

I’ve been thinking a lot about the word atmosphere recently.

It’s probably the word I use most when I describe my work, but I realised I’d never really explained what I mean by it.

So this felt like the right place to start.

This is the first episode of ON: a series of weekly conversations exploring the ideas that shape the way I see weddings. Not just photography, but memory, people, place, beauty, ceremony and everything in between.

This week is all about atmosphere, and why I believe it’s one of the most important things we can preserve from a wedding day.

Every wedding contains hundreds of emotional shifts.

Some arrive loudly.

Others almost pass unnoticed.

Apprehension before walking into the ceremony.

Relief afterwards.

Elation on the dance floor.

The quiet tenderness of an embrace.

The comfort of familiar people.

The excitement of knowing life is about to change.

These aren’t separate moments.

They’re the emotional architecture of a wedding day.

And they’re why I’ve never believed wedding photography is about documenting a schedule.

It’s about recognising these shifts as they happen, knowing when to quietly observe, when to gently guide, and preserving them before they disappear.

Because years from now, it won’t just be the timeline you remember.

It’ll be how it all felt.
